Have you ever wondered what being a copywriter is like?
If it’s the career path you want to go down, below is a glimpse into the lifestyle.
Here is the schedule I generally follow in my role as a copywriter.
Some of the entries below are just examples but they should give you a general idea of what a copywriter’s typical day is like.
A day in the life of a copywriter:
05:30 – Wake up
05:45 – Gym
06:30 – Breakfast. Usually an omelette.
07:00 – Write my personal projects/ read a book
07:30 – Leave for work. Listen to a podcast in the car.
Here’s where it starts to get interesting and for the future copywriters reading this, the following is probably what you came to read…
08:30 – Arrive at the office. Make coffee in the kitchen.
08:30 – Flag important emails. Go over today’s work plan. Organise my tasks in order of importance and deadline proximity.
09:30 – Morning editorial team meeting. Discuss our respective work agendas for the day.
10:00 – Write blogs on accounting. Usually the latest tax news.
11:45 – Coffee. (The most important aspect of copywriting is caffeine).
12:00 – Meeting with a client to discuss their new content strategy. Make a mental note to write up their requests later.
12:45 – Lunch. Usually a meal-prep variant of chicken and veg.
13:15 – Write a press release for a charity event. The client wants to promote themselves as well as their chosen charity. I enjoy writing these.
14:45 – Coffee.
14:50 – Write an article on the latest legal news for a solicitor client’s webpage. The law changes in subtle ways fairly often – you’d be surprised.
16:30 – Coffee.
16:35 – Write web page copy for a new service that one of our client’s is offering.
17:25 – Pack up my laptop and notepads and head out of the office.
That’s where my work day ends but the writing carries on when I get home…
17:30 – Drive home from work. Listen to podcast.
18:30 – Arrive home. Final coffee of the day.
19:00 – Dinner.
20:00 – Write my personal blog.
21:00 – Read a book until I fall asleep.
As you can see, it’s a busy lifestyle and you need to be disciplined to fit everything in.
However, I do get the chance to work from home every now and again, which seems to be becoming a more popular working arrangement for copywriters since the pandemic.
I have found the life of a copywriter to be highly rewarding and I really do enjoy my work.
I get to express my creativity every day, which is the greatest privilege of all!
I would highly recommend that anyone looking to start their career in marketing, begins as a copywriter.
